What you see here is a control surface (i.e. rudder, elevator) of off "who-knows-what." What you don't know is what we started with. A little frame made out of tubing. You can faintly see the outlines of it here in the picture.
- We.....:
- 1. Covered the frame with Fabric and glued it to the frame at the edges.
- 2. Used a "clothes Iron" to tighten the fabric so that it wasn't sloppy.
- 3. Stitched the ribs with riblacing.
- 4. Applied many coats of Nitrate and Butyrate "dope"(don't ask me why it is called dope, although you start feeling pretty loopy if you don't wear a respirator.
- 5. Applied several coats of Silver "dope" so that the fabric reflects sunlight and doesn't deteriorate pre-maturely.
6. Applied Polyurethane (the red color) - Painted on the fancy stripes and letters.
*All spraying was done with a paint gun. these make for very nice paint jobs, but there is a technique. I had so many paint runs in my first coat, it wasn't even funny.*
Note: PK-KJB: PK is the Indonesian symbol, KJB stands for Kars, Jake and Brent. The three guys who worked on the project.
